Couples Therapy

Couples therapy can help to improve communication and resolve many forms of distress in a relationship. There are strategies focused on the what’s best for the relationship rather than either partner being right in a situation. Raising the questions “Do you want to be right? OR Do you want to be happy? (A Course In Miracles)” Determining and remaining clear on what your priorities are can be tremendously helpful in moving past conflict. For instance: “My relationship with my spouse is more important to me than this challenge” is far more productive than “This challenge is more important to me than this relationship.” The need for clarity and focus is paramount when dealing with challenges. Learn to resolve challenges as they arise, not repress or suppress them to be used as ammunition for further hostilities later. A healthy relationship is not one in which there are no disagreements. A healthy relationship is one in which it is safe to have disagreements.

Your relationship can provide the energy, support, and enthusiasm needed to feel happy and optimistic. Here are signs that counseling may be right for your relationship:

  • You feel like you are living separate lives.
  • The same arguments appear repeatedly.
  • Sex is almost non-existent, or it is unpleasant for one or both partners.
  • Someone is cheating or having an affair.
  • The family finances are hidden from one another (”financial infidelity”).
  • Your partner is now “the enemy.”
  • Intimacy is withheld as a form of punishment.
  • One or both parties is more interested in being right than resolving challenges leading to problems being ignored.
  • The relationship feels like it is more difficult than it should be to maintain.
  • There is an ongoing feeling of disinterest and dislike between the partners.

The teacher you need is the person you're living with.

Your 3-Step Success Plan

My therapy is based on helping you transition into who you want to be and how you want to feel through practiced mindfulness and practical psychological processes, concepts and strategies. I am known for helping people get results. This is how it works.

1

Learn

We will discuss your goals and challenges to create clarity in terms of where you are, where you want to be, and how to get there. In this first step you will gain the conceptual and theoretical knowledge of new behaviors, concepts and strategies.

2

Practice

Your participation in homework and assignments will help develop the skills, mindset, and behaviors that will benefit you personally. In this practical application phase, feedback about successes and challenges are pivotal. With consistent and persistent practice you are reinforcing the success that is well within your reach.
3

Achieve

Finally, we will work on integrating these new behaviors, concepts and strategies until you master them and they become part of your identity. When you identify with the new way of being you know you have made changes you can count on.
